PEKANBARU - The government has restored peat in Riau covering an area of 209,977 hectares during the 2016-2022 period with various activities, including the construction of 1,618 canal barriers.

"Synergy and collaboration in the restoration of the peat ecosystem are expected to be able to restore the carrying capacity of the peat ecosystem in order to realize the Peat Hydrological Unit (KHG)," he said.

Hartono said the example of KHG Sungai Siak-Sungai Kampar in Riau Province is the first model of systematic and integrated peat management in realizing permanent peat restoration to reach the target of FOLU Net Sink 2030.

The concept of the ideala FOLU Net Sink 2030 can be realized if all stakeholders such as the Central Government, Provincial Government, Regency Government, CSO, community and private synergize. In the future, we hope that this model can be the best practice for other KHG-KHGs.

Hartono explained that BRGM as a non-structural institution that was formed to facilitate the acceleration of peat restoration in seven priority provinces and the acceleration of mangrove rehabilitation in 9 priority provinces are also committed to climate change mitigation.

The seven provinces that are working in BRGM peat restoration are Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and Papua, and Riau. Riau Province has the widest peat in Indonesia.

"In accordance with the determination of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2017 concerning the Determination of the National Peat Hydrological Unitary Map, the peatland area in Riau Province is 5.3 million hectares which is located at 59 Peat Hydrological Units (KHG)," said Hartono.

Riau Provincial Regional Secretary (Sekdaprov) SF Haryanto said the Riau Provincial Government was also committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as stated in Riau Governor Regulation Number 9 of 2021 concerning Green Riau.

"The Riau Hijau Concept is the commitment of the Riau Provincial Government in optimizing natural resource management to improve the welfare of the Riau community towards sustainable development.
