Dian Sastrowardoyo Becomes Antisocial For The Sake Of The Kretek Girl Series

JAKARTA - Dian Sastrowardoyo recounted several of his struggles in bringing the characterurjayah to life in the series Gadis Kretek. She faces challenges that keep her away from her everyday personality.

The Kretek girl tells the story of Lebas (Arya Saloka) who her father asked her to find a figure in the past, Kayayah (Dian Sastrowardoyo). Lebas is assisted by Arum (Putri Marino) and the secrets between them are starting to emerge. This series is adapted from a novel of the same name from Ratih Kumala.

"For the role of Kalimiyah, I get a lot of directions from Kamila Andini specifically. Her design is far from me, actually, but this is an opportunity to explore the way she talks, expressions, body gestures," said Dian Sastrowardoyo at a press conference today, Wednesday, November 1.

I've played periodic characters but this new is different. I stopped socializing, met friends for 6 months, I stopped listening to modern music, just gamelan," he continued.

Dian explained that the process for filming was easy but what was difficult was the process of exploring the character. Looks the same, but Dian is willing to change her lifestyle for the sake of this new character.

The process is smooth and there are no difficulties, but it's not easy to get into the character. It takes patience. Actors work a lot on their own apart from acting coach, but in the house do a lot on their own," said Dian.

"So I made an allocation for how many hours to focus on writing my hand because I didn't talk much but wrote a lot," he said again.

Dian Sastrowardoyo also does not run or tennis like his routine in order to build an antisocial person. He felt the difficulty because he was someone who really liked socializing.

"It's hard because I'm a person who likes hangouts but I learned that the actor is a slave of character. Indeed, we just have to let it go," said Dian again.

"Dasiyah is so calm, he rarely walks away so I don't know how. I think at one point, I'm happy to have this opportunity," continued Dian Sastrowardoyo.

The Kretek Girl series can be watched on Netflix on November 2, 2023 globally.
