Regions That Will Have New Kodam: Here's A List Of Regions That Are Priority
YOGYAKARTA - Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Admiral Yudo Margono said the priority of establishing a Military Regional Command (Kodam) was only to try it in Papua rather than other regions. So where are the areas that will have new Kodam?
He said there are some new provinces or new autonomous regions (DOB) in Papua, but currently there are only 2, namely Kodam XVII/Cenderawasih and Kodam XVIII/Kasuari.
"It will be carried out in stages, especially the main thing now in the DOB of the expansion area in Papua," said Yudo during a press conference for the ASEAN Chief of Defense Forces Meeting (ACDFM) in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali, Wednesday 7 June.
Known, the government formed 4 new provinces in Papua, including South Papua, Central Papua, Mountains Papua and Southwest Papua.
Yudo said that the creation of new Kodams in various regions cannot be carried out simultaneously. There must be areas that are prioritized first.
The creation of a new Kodam, for Yudo, can be seen from the growth of regional and budget situation allocated by the state.
"Right, it's impossible for everything to go directly, thoroughly, this is impossible for the budget to be sufficient," said Yudo.
Creating new Kodams in various regions can also take years. Although many areas need Kodam, it cannot be done by lightning.
"Of course there is a plan, but it still refers to the budget and developments in the situation in the area," he said.
The discourse on the creation of the Kodam for the first time was made by Army Chief of Staff General Dudung Abdurachman in February. Dudung said the Kodam would be formed in all provinces in Indonesia.
He said the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Admiral Yudo Margono agreed to this matter. Dudung said the proposal was to be followed up by the Commander of the Indonesian National Army (TNI) to the department.
Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto also knows the proposal. For him, it is necessary for a new Kodam in several regions to strengthen Indonesia's defense.

However, the plan was criticized by the Civil Coalition for the Reform of the Security Zone which takes into account the plan to accumulate Kodam in each province is a setback for reform of the Indonesian National Army (TNI).
"We view that the statements of the two officials are baseless, very dangerous, and are a setback for the development of TNI Reform and Human Rights in Indonesia," the coalition said in a written statement some time ago.
They took into account that the discourse betrayed the spirit of the 1998 Reformation, especially the abolition of ABRI's dwifunction doctrine, one of which was the restructuring of the Territorial Command (Koter).
