JAKARTA - Apple is expected to delay the release of the first MacBook and iPad with a new M3 chip until 2024, which is equipped with a 3nm (nanometer) chip.

According to reports circulating, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which is the world's largest chipmaker and as a supporter of Apple devices, has failed production.

TSMC has tried to make a chip that is only 3nm wide with its N3 process, but only works about 55 percent. These results are of course lower than expected.

What TSMC experienced made some technology companies rethink their plans to make 3nm chips.

A report from the EU Times reinforces the information, in which the main reason for delaying the manufacture of large amounts of 3nm chips was due to the lack of needed equipment and lower success rates.

Launching GizChina, Saturday, May 6, TSMC must wait for the ASML NXE:3800E EUV system, luxury equipment which is expected to make chip manufacturing up to 30 percent faster. However, this equipment delivery was delayed, which affected the company.

In February, DigiTimes reported that Apple had ordered all 3nm supplies belonging to TSMC. Apple's A17 Bionic Chip, which will be used on the new iPhone 15 Pro, is rumored to have a 3nm process.

Furthermore, as the iPhone cycle reaches every quarter between the end of November and October, Apple and TSMC are likely to prioritize the A17 Bionic manufacturing over the M3.

Apple's M3 could be the first chip on a private computer made using the 3nm manufacturing process. The move to 3nm increases the transistor density and is an improvement over the current improved 5nm process used with M2.

It is known, the M3 will offer more processing as well as have lower power demand, which could lead to more performance improvements than the usual year-on-year increase, as reported by MacWorld.

Apple is not the only company affected by this problem. Nvidia and Qualcomm hope to start making their 3nm devices by 2025.
