JAKARTA - Indonesia was elected to the Executive Board of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the 2023-2027 period representing the East Asia and Pacific regions.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said Indonesia was elected after getting the most votes and managed to win one of the four Executive Council seats with the most votes.

"Alhamdulillah, we managed to get the most votes, this is an achievement and thank you for the cooperation," said Sandiaga Uno in a written statement, Saturday, June 17.

Apart from Indonesia, other Asian countries that were selected were Japan, China, and South Korea.

Later, representing the East Asia and Pacific Commissions together with China, Japan, and South Korea, Indonesia will be responsible for compiling UNWTO programs in the Asia Pacific region to be reported in the General Assembly.

For this achievement, Menparekraf Sandiaga Uno expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) of the Republic of Indonesia, especially Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

In addition, appreciation was also given to the Kemenparekraf team and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) for Cambodia.

"Thank you, Mrs. Foreign Minister, because the Foreign Minister also intervened and this is a trust for Indonesia that we must protect," said Sandiaga.

Indonesia through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is committed to encouraging the development of the tourism sector in the East Asia, ASEAN, and Pacific regions, by focusing on sustainable tourism, human resources, digitization, and tourism transformation.

On the same occasion, Indonesia also advanced to become part of the Task Force on "Redesigning Tourism for The Future".

Through this UNWTO special work team, Indonesia has the opportunity to design a future for the world tourism sector.

The concept of new tourism is expected to have a positive impact on the world tourism sector and the archipelago. Thus, business opportunities are increasingly created and jobs are increasingly open.

"Of course, we also took one chairman in the Redesigning Tourism for the Future program. So, this is a very tough task and the team must remain solid," he added.
