Batam City Government Uses Sea Water Processing System To Offer If Drought Due To El Nino

KEPRI - The weather phenomenon of El Nino can make the area affected by dryness. A number of prevention efforts are carried out by local governments (Pemda) such as preparing Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO).

SWRO is a sea water treatment system that has a significant impact on helping residents of Behindpadang Island from the threat of drought.

This technology is used by the Batam City Government (Pemkot) in the area in addition to the availability of water in the reservoir.

"In 2019, during the dry season, Alhamdulillah, the one who saved the community was the SWRO system. So sea water treatment is a freshwater that was built by the central PUPR Ministry from 2017," said the Head of Behindpadang sub-district, Yudi Admajianto, in Batam, Riau Islands, Monday, July 31, which was confiscated by Antara.

Yudi explained that there are other ways that residents do when the dry season is really felt until the water supply of the SWRO system is insufficient. One of them is buying clean water on drums that are quite expensive from Tanjung Pinggir, Batam City.

"One cubic of water is accommodated in five drums, and one drum is sold for Rp. 25 thousand. Meanwhile, SWRO water can be five drums cubically and one drum is Rp. 20 thousand. So if you buy 1 cubic water, Rp. 100,000. That's the last alternative, if there is no water anymore, and the system buys," he said.

Yudi added that until now the availability of water from the shelter reservoir and the SWRO system can still meet the needs of the people behindpadang.

"Alhamdulillah, both are still operating. Hopefully there will be no drought so that our two water sources remain smooth," he said.

Furthermore, Yudi said that if the availability of water only focuses on the SWRO system, the engine will be damaged more quickly because it produces more often.

"But based on the experience of the last few months behindpadang there is still rain. In fact, in the last few days it has been raining even though it was fast or only for a short time. Hopefully it won't be drought," said Yudi.
