Google Restricts Chatbot Response And AI Search Related To 2024 US Presidential Election

JAKARTA - Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., announced on Tuesday 19 December that it would limit the types of questions regarding elections that could be answered by their chatbot, Bard. In addition, it also limits the experience of a general search ahead of the 2024 US Presidential Election. The restrictions are expected to take effect in early 2024.

In addition to the US, a number of groundbreaking elections are expected in 2024, including national elections in India, the world's largest democracy, and in South Africa, as well as other elections.

The tech companies state that they will "work with a greater emphasis on the role of artificial intelligence (AI)" as they seek to serve voters and campaigns related to these elections.

Meta Platform Inc., which owns Facebook, also stated in November that it would ban political campaigns and advertisers from using their latest generative AI ad product.

Advertisers on Meta should also reveal when artificial intelligence (AI) or other digital methods are being used to change or create political, social ads or related elections on Facebook and Instagram.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk's social media platform X, which is being investigated by the European Union, said in August that it would now allow political advertising in the US from political candidates and parties. They will also expand their safety and election teams ahead of the US election. All previous political ads have been banned globally on X since 2019.

Governments around the world have been working to regulate artificial intelligence given the threats it presents, such as the spread of misleading information.

Giant tech companies will face new rules in the European Union to clearly mark political advertising on their platforms, who paid for it, how much was paid for, and which election was targeted.
