JAKARTA - Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, on Tuesday, January 16 stated that he had no problems with OpenAI's partner management structure, two months after the startup's non-profit board temporarily removed its chief executive without considering investors' interests.

The surprise firing of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in November over alleged communications failures sparked a crisis at the startup behind ChatGPT, with employees threatening to resign en masse and work for Microsoft, which is backing OpenAI with billions of dollars in aid.

"I feel comfortable. I don't have any problems with any structure," Nadella told a Bloomberg News event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos.

OpenAI's board, tasked with protecting the startup's nonprofit mission to develop artificial intelligence that benefits humanity, finally reinstated Altman days later and is now filling out its membership.

“I hope we will make a lot of progress in the coming months,” OpenAI CEO Altman said at a Bloomberg event in Davos. "And after that, the new board will review the regulatory structure. We will assess it from various angles."

Microsoft has now secured a non-voting observer position on the OpenAI board. Competition authorities in Europe, the United Kingdom, and reportedly the United States have begun examining the Microsoft-OpenAI relationship. Their deal guarantees the Windows maker a significant amount of startup profits subject to certain conditions, said a person briefed on the terms.

According to Nadella, the fact that Microsoft doesn't fully own OpenAI differentiates their deal in a pro-competitive way. "Partnerships are one way, actually, to have competition," he said.

Microsoft's investment in computing power and years of betting on OpenAI before ChatGPT's rise to fame were, according to Nadella, "very risky bets" and "not all conventional wisdom."
