JAKARTA - Indian authorities announced that the country's COVID-19 infection cases had soared again, even setting a record for the highest daily addition since last February on Friday.

India's Ministry of Health said in a statement that the country recorded 17,336 cases of infection on Friday, making it the highest record since February 20.

"The daily number of deaths from COVID-19 increased by 13, bringing the total (from COVID-19 in the country) to 524,954", the ministry said.

India's richest state Maharashtra recorded more than 5,200 new infections on Wednesday, state authorities said, with 2,479 of them coming from the financial capital Mumbai.
