US Senators File Bill to Ban Use of Artificial Intelligence in False Political Advertising

JAKARTA - Two Democratic senators and two Republican senators from the United States on Tuesday, September 12, introduced legislation to prohibit the use of artificial intelligence that creates content that falsely depicts candidates in political advertisements to influence federal elections.

Authorities around the world are struggling to regulate and legislate on issues related to artificial intelligence as the popularity of services like ChatGPT increases.

Experts say that the spread of artificial intelligence tools could make it easier, for example, to carry out mass hacking campaigns or create fake profiles on social media to spread false information and propaganda.

Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar, chair of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration; and Chris Coons, who chairs the judiciary committee's intellectual property rights subcommittee, along with Republican senators Josh Hawley of the Judiciary Committee's privacy subcommittee; and Susan Collins, co-chair of the Budget Committee, called for action in a joint statement.

"Proposition of this bill would ... prohibit the distribution of materially misleading artificial intelligence-generated audio, images, or video relating to federal candidates in political or issue-specific advertising to influence federal elections or fundraising," said the statement, as quoted by Reuters.
