JAKARTA - Spotify is looking for ways to grow its income, by diverting the previously free lyric feature to pay aka Premium.

Spotify's new policy doesn't seem to have rolled out globally, and is only visible to some users who don't have a Premium subscription package.

This means that Spotify has just tested the switch of the feature to some of its small users. Users with ad packages recently realized they lost the ability to view the lyrics in the song's streaming app, which usually appears at the bottom of the screen when the song plays.

Instead, they get a message that suggests enjoying the lyrics in the Premium package, along with the link that sets them up to subscribe.

"On Spotify, we routinely carry out a number of tests, some of these tests eventually pave the way for our wider user experience and other testing only serve as important learning," Spotify's global communications co-head CJ Stanley told The Verge, quoted Wednesday, September 6.

"In accordance with our standard practices, we are currently testing it with a limited number of users in some markets," he added.

Stanley also did not explain further whether the Premium package with lyrics would experience a price increase and when this feature would be launched soon.

The news of the change in the lyric feature for Premium subscribers is actually not surprising. According to Digital Trends, Spotify is indeed working on making a profit after the loss report in the last quarter.

The company has also recently spent a lot of money paying severance pay after dismissing 6 percent of its employees at the start of the year.
