JAKARTA - Several user reports have surfaced since the launch of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card last month claiming that this GPU is affected by performance issues due to running at too high a temperature. Now, AMD has released a statement acknowledging that some Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference GPUs have been affected by a manufacturing fault.

This issue was initially reported on forums such as Reddit where many users said their RX 7900 GPU was overheating, which was hindering performance and in some cases, crashing their computer systems.

Temperatures as high as 115 degrees Celsius (239 Fahrenheit) have been reported. While desktop Radeon RX 7900 Series GPUs can operate up to 110 degrees Celsius when under heavy loads (such as 4K gaming), prolonged periods of time is not recommended for GPU health. Users also reported that the card overheated when running undemanding workloads.

"We are working to determine the cause of the unexpected performance throttling of the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card," AMD said in a statement, quoted by The Verge.

“Based on our observations to date, we believe this issue is related to the thermal solution used in AMD's reference design and occurs in a limited number of cards sold. We're working to resolve this issue for the affected cards. Customers experiencing this unexpected limitation should contact AMD support," AMD said in a statement.

AMD is offering to exchange or refund customers affected by GPU overheating

AMD initially dismissed the issue, but turned down customers who submitted replacement GPUs and told them it was "temperature normal." An investigation from German-language technology site Igor's Lab suggests the issue is related to the RX 7900 XTX's vapor chamber, which may allude to a "thermal solution" issue that AMD reported in its statement.

Only a limited number of the RX 7900 XTX reference GPUs (made by AMD) are believed to be affected as models from other manufacturers can contain non-reference cooling solutions. VideoCardz reports that AMD is now offering to return or exchange cards for customers affected by the issue.
