JAKARTA - Pocket Casts, the world's most powerful podcast platform for iOS and Android, announced a few days ago that its mobile app is now open source.

"We are excited and proud to announce that the Pocket Casts mobile app is now open source!" the company said in an announcement shared on Twitter.

This decision was taken following the acquisition made by WordPress parent company, Automattic of Pocket Casts last July.

"We've really wanted to take this step since joining Automattic last year. I know that open source is the most powerful idea of our generation," he further explained.

The top podcasting company believes that podcasting cannot and should not be controlled by Apple and Spotify, and instead supports a diverse ecosystem of third-party clients.

Launched in 2010, Pocket Casts has quickly become the standard in the podcasting industry due to its innovative features for listening, searching, and discovering podcasts as well as its sleek design and customization options.

With Pocket Casts made open source, now everyone can access the code to help make it better such as fixing bugs, adding new features, even paying for it to build their own competitor's services on top of the Pocket Cast codebase.

"We chose the Mozilla Public License because we wanted to encourage all developers to share the modifications they made to the code," the company said.

Meanwhile, apart from the open source announcement, the Pocket Casts team will continue to add new features, fix bugs, and expand the offering into its Plus service.

Pocket Casts is known to have two variations of tiers, the first is the free variant and the second is the Pocket Cast Plus variant.

Pocket Casts is now available for Android, iOS and the web, as well as Amazon Echo, CarPlay, Android Auto, Sonos, Apple Watch, Chromecast, and HomePod (via Google Cast and Airplay 2).
