German Chancellor Says Social Media Should Be Responsible For Content On Its Platforms

JAKARTA - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz underlined the importance of social media companies taking responsibility for the content on their platforms. This he said in an interview on Thursday, June 9 while defending the country's Digital Services Act.

“There needs to be platforms and companies that recognize and accept their social responsibility – as we know and expect in the analog world,” Scholz said at the digital conference re:publica in Berlin.

According to Scholz, as quoted by Reuters, laws such as the Digital Services Act, which foresees hefty fines for online platforms that do not control illegal content, help to make the market stronger and will not lead to more self-censorship.

He compared the DSA (Digital Service Act) to rental protection laws, saying that in places, where there is more protection for tenants, there are more rentable apartments available on the market.
