Traffic Accident Rate Is Still High, General Chairperson Of IMI Opens 2nd Force Journey Rescue Training In 2023

JAKARTA - Chairman of the MPR RI as well as Chairman of the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet) opened the 2nd batch of Rescue Journey Training in 2023.

This training was attended by 140 participants from various automotive communities. Held in collaboration with Ride Safety Culture Education Journey (RESCUE), INAnews, 645 Magazine, Tekiro Handtools, and Mayapada Hospital, as well as various other supporting organizations.

"This rescue briefing and safety riding training activity is very urgent and crucial, considering that the number of quantities and fatality rates for traffic accidents in Indonesia is quite high. As an illustration, BPS recorded that the number of traffic accidents in 2021 reached 103,645 cases, and caused 25,266 deaths. Then in the period from January 2022 to September 2022, Korlantas Polri recorded 94,617 traffic accidents that occurred on the highway," said Bamsoet when opening the 2nd Anniversary Rescue Journey Education. 2023 in Jakarta, Sunday, October 1st.

Present included Central IMI Media and Communique Dwi Nugroho, Chairman of DKI Jakarta IMI Anondo Eko, Chairman of the Indonesian Big Motor Advisory Council Basrizal Koto and Chairman of the Indonesian Big Motorcycle Rio Castello.

Bamsoet explained, at several long holidays, especially during the celebration of religious holidays, the number of traffic accidents also increased significantly. For example, during Operation Candles in the context of the 2022 Christmas celebration, the number of traffic accidents rose 11 percent from the previous year. Then at the time of Eid Al-Fitr 2023 homecoming, there were 1,457 accidents that caused 189 deaths.

"Most or about 61 percent of road accidents are caused by human factors, especially two-wheeled riders. According to data from Korlantas Polri, of the total traffic accident cases, 70 percent of them involve two-wheeled vehicles. This is directly proportional to the fact that until July 2023, the number of ownership of two-wheeled vehicles reached 130.5 million units, or around 83.45 percent of the total private vehicle ownership in Indonesia," said Bamsoet.

Bamsoet also explained, compared to other countries, currently Indonesia is ranked 19th in the death rate due to traffic accidents, with a death rate ratio of 11 per 100,000 population. In the fatality aspect of accident victims, most of the defects or deaths of accident victims are caused by delays or errors in providing assistance.

"It is our common concern that there are still many motorists who do not understand some basic knowledge in providing assistance to accident victims. For example controlling or stopping bleeding, freeing respiratory roads, evacuating victims to safe places, etc. This is where it is important to provide briefing and training today which presents competent resource persons in their fields," concluded Bamsoet.
