JAKARTA - Netflix released the first teaser from the series Girl Kretek after it premiered at the 2023 Content Asia Summit. The series, which was based on the novel by Ratih Kumala, tells a love story set in the kretek industry in the '60s.
In the first teaser, the Kretek Girl focuses on the Daisyah played by Dian Sastrowardoyo and her struggle to make the ideal kretek cigarette sauce. Her appearance is elegant and charismatic by wearing a kebaya. Then, he met Soeraja, played by Ario Bayu.

The Kretek girl was directed by Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah and produced by BASE Entertainment with showrunner Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson. Ratih Kumala and Tanya Yuson also acted as scriptwriters with Manya K. Priyanti and Ambaridzki Ramadhantyo.
"This is a story set in two time periods with so many characters. There is a family drama and romance, with the background of the Indonesian kretek industry. This story has been with us for years and we are very excited to present it to the audience," said Kamila Andini in a media statement received by VOI, Wednesday, August 23.
Kretek girls were also confirmed to hold a premiere at the 2023 Busan Film Festival before it aired on Netflix.
Besides Dian Sastrowardoyo and Ario Bayu, this series also stars Arya Saloka, Putri Marino, Ibnu Jamil, Sheila Dara Aisha, Tissa Biani, Ine Febriyanti, Rukman Roesadi, Tutie Kirana, Pritt Timothy, Winky Wiriawan, Dimas Aditya, and Verdi Soelaiman.
The Kretek girl became Netflix Indonesia's last release this year before continuing some original content announced in 2022.
The Kretek Girl series will be available on November 2, 2023 on Netflix.
