Iconic Music Video Director Of Bohemian Rhapsody, Bruce Gowers Dies

JAKARTA - Bruce Gowers, director of Queen's iconic music video, Bohemian Rhapsody, has passed away at the age of 82.

The Emmy and Grammy winner, who also directed 234 episodes of American Idol, died in Santa Monica, California, Sunday, January 15 from complications from an acute respiratory infection, his family confirmed via Billboard.

“[Gowers] has always brought boundless enthusiasm, energy, passion, and joy to his work,” a statement read.

“He loves and is loved by the crew he works for and is widely recognized for his generosity as a colleague, constantly encouraging and promoting the talented people on his team.

“Funny and fiercely honest, he will be remembered in countless legendary stories that will keep his charming spirit alive for years to come. He was always happiest in the control room, on the boat in the Bahamas, and of course, at home with the dogs and friends and family.”

Filmed at Elstree Studios, Hertfordshire in 1975, Bohemian Rhapsody is credited with being the first promotional music video ever made.

The music video premiered on Top Of The Pops just 10 days after filming was done, with the cost of £4,500.

The visual opens with a shot of all four Queen members - Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon - standing in a diamond formation with their heads tilted back into the shadows.
