Brief Profiles of 4 Stadiums That Will be Held as Locations For the 2023 U-17 World Cup in Indonesia

JAKARTA - The 2033 U-17 World Cup will take place in Indonesia from November 10 - December 2. The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) and FIFA have agreed on the location to be used.

There are four stadiums on the island of Java that have been officially designated as venues for the 2023 U-17 World Cup, the four are Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) in Jakarta, Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Manahan Stadium in Solo and Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya.

Later, JIS and Si Jalak Harupat will be the stadiums for two group matches, while Manahan and Gelora Bung Tomo will each hold one group match.

For the opening, PSSI said it would be held at Gelora Bung Tomo. However, we still have to wait for an official announcement from FIFA.

The following are profiles of the four stadiums for the 2023 U-17 World Cup:

Jakarta International Stadium (JIS)

Jakarta International Stadium is a relatively new stadium whose construction has attracted controversy, but this location was officially appointed as one of the venues for the 2023 U-17 World Cup.

According to the PT Wijaya Karya Tbk (Persero) mussels website, JIS has a land area of ​​221,000 square meters with an audience capacity of 82 thousand. Led by PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro), construction of the stadium located in North Jakarta began in September 2019 and was completed in April 2022.

The Governor of DKI Jakarta at that time, Anies Baswedan, inaugurated it in July 2022. The three contractors handling the construction were Wika Gedung, PT PP, and Jaya Construction.

Si Jalak Harupat Stadium Bandung

The Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Soreang Regency, Bandung is the brainchild of Indonesian politician Obar Sobarna. This stadium was built in 2003 and is intended as one of the headquarters of Persib Bandung and Persikab Bandung Regency.

Built with an area of ​​28,177 square meters, this stadium can accommodate 27 thousand spectators. This stadium was renovated in 2023 for the U-20 World Cup which was then canceled in Indonesia.

Even so, repairs continued until they were finally completed in April 2023. The total renovation budget cost IDR 155.17 billion.

Manahan Stadium, Solo

Manahan Stadium, Solo, is rumored to be the venue for the semifinals and final of the U-17 World Cup. This stadium was first built in 1989 at the initiation of Tien Soeharto, President Soeharto's wife.

Manahan Stadium has a capacity of 25 thousand spectators with an area of ​​170,000 square meters. This stadium was also renovated for the U-20 World Cup which was canceled.

The U-17 World Cup is not the first big event to be held at Manahan Stadium, previously this stadium was also the location for the 2010 AFF U-16 Cup, the 2011 and 2022 ASEAN Para Games, and the 2013 AFC Cup for Persibo Bojonegoro.

Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium, Surabaya

The Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya was first built in 2008 and officially opened in August 2010. The headquarters of the League 1 club, Persebaya Surabaya, has a capacity of 55 thousand spectators.

Just like Si Jalak Harupat Stadium and Manahan Stadium, Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium has also previously been renovated for the 2023 U-20 World Cup. This stadium once hosted the FIFA Matchday party for the Indonesia vs Palestine national team in June 2023.
