Knocked Out Of US Open 2023, Iga Swiatek: I Was Just Surprised

JAKARTA - A surprise occurred at the US Open 2023. The defending champion, Iga Swiatek, failed to break into the quarter-finals.

He was eliminated after losing to Jelena Ostappenko in the round of 16, Monday, September 4, WIB. Swiatek had won the opening set against Ostapenko, but unexpectedly had to give up the ticket to the next round.

Ostappenko was able to rise to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 and secure his fourth win of four matches against the Polish player.

"He played well against me. He always did it," Swiatek said as quoted by AFP via Antara.

"I was just surprised because my level changed so drastically. I didn't really know what was going on with my game, I suddenly felt out of control," he added.

Not only did Swiatek fail to get a ticket to the next round, but Swiatek will also lose its peak position in the women's ranking list.

In an earlier game, Gauff ended Caroline Wozniacki, when the sixth seed won 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 over the world's former world number one.

The 19-year-old recorded his 15th win of 16 matches, a pace that covered titles in Washington and Cincinnati last month.
