JAKARTA – The world's number one men's singles badminton player Viktor Axelsen has confirmed that he will withdraw from the 2022 Malaysia Masters which will be held from 5 to 10 July this week.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist was announced via his personal Twitter account on Monday, July 4. He left because he needed rest.

Apart from withdrawing from the Super 500 level event, Axelsen also withdrew from the Singapore Open competition on July 12-17.

"When I woke up this morning my body and head told me to take a break and recharge before going on the court again", wrote Axelsen.

"I need a few days to rest, celebrate the latest win with my family and then rebuild my goals", he continued.

Axelsen just won the Malaysia Open last weekend. He brought home the title after beating Kento Momota in the final.

It was the third title in the last three tournaments he participated in. He previously won the Indonesia Masters and Indonesia Open last month.

"First of all, I want to thank you for all your support during these busy weeks. I am of course very happy with the results of the last 3 tournaments", tweeted Axelsen.

"It was amazing to play in Indonesia and Malaysia in front of such amazing crowds. And thank you also to my team, family, and friends for their relentless support", he added.
