Marcus Fernaldi Gideon Has To Undergo Surgery, Minions Cancel Appearance At Korea Open And Asian Championships

JAKARTA – Indonesian badminton player, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, had to go up to the operating table. This action was done to remove the small bones that grew in his right and left ankles.

This process led Marcus and his co-star Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo to withdraw from the 2022 Korea Open which will take place on April 5-10 in Suncheon city and the 2022 Asian Championships which will be held from April 26 to May 1 in Manila, Philippines.

"So based on the results of observations and x-rays, Marcus has a small bone growth that shouldn't be in his right and left ankles," said Head of Field of Coaching and Achievement (Binpres) of The Central Board of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PP PBSI) Rionny Mainaky in a statement received.

Marcus had to undergo surgery after consulting with PBSI doctor Nicolaas C. Budhiparama. The reason is, the small bone has an influence on Marcus' appearance in previous tournaments.

Marcus / Kevin are currently still the world's number one men's doubles. They will be Indonesia's mainstay in May in the important Thomas Cup tournament.

"We hope Marcus' operation goes smoothly, the recovery process is maximal, and he can quickly return to competing. It won't be too long of an absence because Marcus / Kevin are one of our mainstays," Rionny hoped.

Marcus said that initially he only felt pain in his right ankle. However, in the last few days, his left ankle also started to hurt.

"I've been feeling pain in my right ankle for a long time, but I try to endure it. Yesterday at All England it turned out to be both. When I arrived in Jakarta, I immediately checked and it turned out that a small bone was growing. I had to undergo surgery," said Marcus.
