Indonesian Men's Badminton Team Beats Hong Kong 4-1

JAKARTA – The Indonesian men's badminton team defeated Hong Kong in the first match of Group A of the 2022 Asian Team Badminton Championships.

The victory was determined after the men's doubles Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin won over Ho Wai Lun/Yeung Ming Nok in the fourth match at the Setia City Convention Center, Selangor, Malaysia, Tuesday, February 15.

The first number for Merah Putih was contributed by the men's singles, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo. The 55th-ranked badminton player in the world took 58 minutes to beat Lee Cheuk Yiu.

Unfortunately, Indonesia failed to move away in the second match, which was played by the men's doubles of Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan. The pair lost 12-21, 21-18, 20-22 to Law Cheuk Him/Lee Chun Hei Reginald.

The third match for Indonesia, which was played by Ikhsan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay's men's singles, was much more dramatic. Representative Garuda lost the first set before stealing the next two sets to win 16-21, 22-20, 21-17 in 67 minutes.

In the fourth party, Leo/Daniel, who is the men's doubles winners at the 2019 Junior Badminton World Championships in Russia, managed to become the decisive factor in Indonesia's victory after stopping their opponent in two sets of 22-20, 21-16 which took 32 minutes.

Christian Adinata, who played in the last match, also managed to add points for Indonesia. He appeared impressive throughout 38 minutes to beat Jason Gunawan with a score of 21-15 and 21-14.

Furthermore, Leo Rolly Carnando and his friends will meet with South Korea on Thursday, February 17th.

Previously, the Indonesian women's team had already secured victory over the Hong Kong women's team. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung and her friends also brought home the result with a score of 4-1 over the opposing team.

The men's team came with the status of defending champions in the men's sector of the tournament which became a qualifier for the Thomas and Uber Cups. Not only the defending champion, but the Indonesian men's team is also the champion in the last three editions.

In the 2020 edition, the Indonesian men's team came out as champions after defeating Malaysia. The Merah Putih Team won with a landslide score of 3-1, in the final match which took place at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, Philippines.
