Residents Asked To Be Alert To Potential Rob Floods In The Riau Islands Until January 4, 2025

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Class I Meteorological Station Hang Nadim Batam reminded people in the Riau Islands to be aware of the possibility of tidal flooding due to the increase in the maximum sea level.

"The new moon phase, which falls on December 29, 2024, has the potential to trigger a significant increase in the maximum tide, which can cause tidal flooding," said Head of Hang Nadim Batam Meteorological Station, Ramlan, as quoted by ANTARA.

BMKG estimates that this tidal flood has the potential to occur from December 29, 2024 to January 4, 2025, so that coastal communities are asked to increase their vigilance.

Some areas that are thought to be affected by the tidal wave include Batam City, especially coastal areas in Batu Aji, Batu Ampar, Sekupang, and Nongsa sub-districts. In Lingga Regency, coastal areas in West Singkep, Singkep Pesisir, and Senayang sub-districts have the potential to be affected.

In addition, in Tanjungpinang City, tidal flooding is predicted to hit the coast of Tanjungpinang Barat, Tanjungpinang Kota, and Bukit Bestari sub-districts. Meanwhile, in Bintan Regency, the potential for coastal flooding includes North Bintan, Sebong Bay, and East Bintan Districts.

"This rising tide can disrupt transportation activities around ports, community activities in coastal areas, as well as loading and unloading processes at ports," added Ramlan.

BMKG urges the public to continue to pay attention to the latest information from the authorities in order to anticipate the impact that may arise due to this phenomenon.
