JAKARTA - The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) allied to the US said five of their fighters were killed in an attack by Turkish-backed forces in the northern Syrian city of Manbij.

The fighting in Manbij broke out after Bashar al-Assad was ousted nearly two weeks ago.

Turkey and the Syrian armed group it supports, seized control of the city from the Kurdish-led SDF on December 9.

The SDF, an ally of the US coalition against ISIS militants, was spearheaded by the YPG, a group Ankara considers an extension of the militant Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that fought the Turkish state for 40 years.

Turkey considers PKK, YPG and SDF as terrorist groups.

The United States (US) has mediated to stop fighting between Turkey and the Syrian Arab group it supports and the SDF.

The US State Department said on Wednesday the ceasefire around Manbij had been extended to the end of this week.

But a Turkish defense ministry official said a day later there was no talk of a ceasefire agreement with the SDF.
