JAKARTA - The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) plans to build 49 air-conditioned rest areas for goods delivery throughout the city.

RTA said the place of istiahat would later be equipped with snacks, cold water and cell phone charging stations.

Depending on the location, the rest area is capable of accommodating up to 10 people and has a parking lot for motorcycles. Meanwhile, the outside of the rest area is designed to reduce the effects of sunlight.

Dubai authorities said the initiative aims to improve road safety, offering drivers a place to rest comfortably while waiting for orders.

The plan is that the resting place will, among other things, be built in Arabian Ranches, International City, Business Bay, Al Quoz, Al Karama, Al Animal, Al Jaddaf and Mirdif, as well as other districts in the emirate.

So far, the authorities have completed the construction of two rest areas in Al Barsha. The rest of the other locations are scheduled to be built in three stages.

The target is that the entire rest area will be completed in July next year.

"The construction of this resting place is part of RTA's efforts to provide a decent work environment for goods carriers, given the substantial growth in the shipping business in recent years to meet the public's demand for goods," said RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer, launching The National News November 5.

"The selection of rest area locations for delivery drivers is based on a thorough analysis of operational data, as well as identification of areas with the highest demand, coordinating with delivery companies," he said.

In March, authorities announced plans to build a rest area for goods carriers on Jalan Sheikh Zayed, near the Plaza Festival in Jebel Ali Village, in Port Saeed next to Al Muraqqabat 22, and in the Al Khor 2 Ras Industrial Estate near Al Manama Street.

"This initiative stems from RTA efforts to regulate and improve the safety of the shipping sector, which has experienced major growth in recent years," he explained.

"The number of companies offering motorcycle delivery services in Dubai grew to 2.891 in 2022, an increase of 40 percent compared to the previous year," he said.

Separately, Abu Dhabi announced plans to build a rest area for delivery carriers equipped with air conditioning, seating, water, and parking areas in July.
