JAKARTA - Indonesia was elected as a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the period 2023-2027 at the 42nd UNESCO General Conference at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

Indonesia is supported by 154 countries and elected for the eighth time since becoming a member of UNESCO in 1950.

Indonesian Ambassador to France Mohamad Oemar said this reflected world confidence in Indonesia's significant contribution to advancing culture, education, science, communication and information. Oemar as Indonesia's Permanent Delegation for UNESCO thanked UNESCO member countries.

"Indonesia is committed to being actively involved and working with other member countries to ensure progress and sustainability in various fields that are the focus of UNESCO," said Oemar as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, November 16.

"We really appreciate the principles of pluralism, multilateralism, and international cooperation; which are the keys to success in answering world challenges including achieving the goals of the Sustainable Development Agenda in all competency areas that are UNESCO mandates," he continued.

As a member of the Executive Board, Indonesia's role is very important, considering that one of its duties is to actively participate in formulating policies and strategic decisions regarding UNESCO programs and policies.

Dewan Eksekutif juga berperan penting dalam mengawasi pelaksanaan program-program UNESCO dan memastikan anggaran organisasi digunakan secara efisien dan efektif.

Apart from Indonesia, a number of Asian-Pacific countries were also elected as members of the Executive Council for the same period, namely Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Korea, and Australia.

In the election of members of the council, 188 UNESCO member countries were present, 181 countries of which met the requirements to vote.
