PeKANBARU - Riau Governor Syamsuar submitted his resignation as governor for the 2019-2024 term in the DPRD Plenary Session because he would run as a candidate for the legislative member of the DPR in the 2024 General Election.

The plenary session chaired by the Chairperson of the Riau DPRD, Yulisman, was attended by the Regional Secretary of Riau Province SF Hariyanto, a member of the Riau DPRD, Regional Apparatus Organizations (OPD) and a regional leadership communication forum, Thursday, October 5.

"We are resigning, the mandate of legislation is like that," said Syamsuar as quoted by ANTARA.

In a letter dated September 27, Governor Syamsuar submitted his resignation as governor.

It reads "Together with this letter, I propose my resignation as Governor of Riau in order to fulfill one of the requirements as a candidate for the legislative member of the DPR RI in the 2024 General Election".

Syamsuar who is also the Chairman of the Regional Leadership Council I of the Riau Golkar Party advanced from the Riau Electoral Area 1.

After the plenary session, Deputy Chairperson of the Riau DPRD, Hardianto, told reporters that Governor Syamsuar's resignation letter would be forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs for follow-up.

"This will be followed up by the Ministry of Home Affairs until the President's dismissal of Mr. Syamsuar through the Ministry of Home Affairs is issued," said Hardianto.

In accordance with the applicable regulations because Riau Deputy Governor Eddy Natar did not resign, the Deputy Governor will fill the vacancy for the position of Governor of Riau until the Syamsuar-Edy leadership period ends.

"In accordance with the rules, because the deputy governor is still there. So until the end of the position of governor will lead," he said.
