SORONG - The Sorong Resort Police, Southwest Papua, named the head of the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Islamic Boarding School with the initials K in Sorong Regency as a suspect on suspicion of sexual abuse and sexual intercourse with a number of female students.

"We have named the head of the Islamic boarding school as a suspect and we have detained him at the Sorong Police Headquarters," said Sorong Police Chief AKBP Yohanes Agustiandaru as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 30.

He explained that the first victim of sexual abuse had reported to the Sorong Police on August 28, 2023. The victim recounted the incident of sexual intercourse and sexual abuse that she experienced from 2014 to 2019.

"From his statement, the victim has been molested and sexually assaulted by the perpetrator several times from 2014 to 2019," explained Yohanes.

A day later (29 August 2023), the Sorong Police received a report on the same incident from other female students who were victims.

"For this second report, there are victims whose victims only experience sexual abuse and some report sexual intercourse. A total of three victims reported it," he said.

Regarding the report, the Sorong Police conducted a series of investigations and looked for evidence, including conducting a post-mortem on the victim and examining a number of witnesses.

"Regarding the three reports, we will continue to carry out a series of active investigations to make this case clear," he added.

The police chief said the reason the victim had just reported to the police was because at the time of the incident he was still a santri and was also a minor. In addition, there is a fear when he wants to report, but on the one hand, he is still bound by the status of a student at the pesantren.

"Yesterday there was one of the victims who was scolded by the reported so that the victim finally dared to open up and tell his family and parents what happened. Finally, the victim's family immediately reported it to the Sorong Police," he explained.

Currently, learning and learning activities at PonpesSalafiyah Syafi Iyah are still running normally as usual.

"We do not install a police line in the Islamic boarding school, we will continue to monitor it there. This is still an initial investigation, later we will dig deeper into the information from the reported party. Later, if there are developments, we will convey it again," said the Police Chief.

For his actions, the suspect Kdijerat under Article 81 paragraph 1 and paragraph 3 in conjunction with Article 76 D and or Article 82 paragraph 1 in conjunction with Article 76 E of Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law Number 23 of 2002 concerning Child Protection with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
