Russia Wants To Increase Nuclear Energy Cooperation With Asia And The Middle East

JAKARTA - Russia has the potential to increase cooperation in the energy sector with Asian and Middle Eastern countries, said Russia's head of nuclear power company Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev.

"Of course, the potential for growth in the energy sector in general, and especially in the nuclear industry, is in Asia, the Middle East, and they only want our technology and supply," said Likhachev during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a transcript released by the Kremlin. "Regarding that, of course we are currently increasing production and will strengthen our leadership," he continued.

Likhachev expressed his gratitude to Putin for his support in the company's acquisition of Budyonovskoye uranium reserves in Kazakhstan, making Rosatom the company with the second-largest uranium reserves.

He said Rosatom had started to increase the delivery of its products abroad, especially to friendly countries.

The countries are countries in Asia, China, the Middle East, Africa. There we have a growth of up to 60-70 percent in various types of supply to a series of processes for the development of nuclear fuels," he said.

Likhachev also said these countries experienced "extraordinary pressure", both politically and economically.

"Of course, at the current point, we don't see any specific prospects for growth in the European market, and not just because there is an unfriendly attitude towards us, but because there is no potential for growth there," he said.
