Ten pro-government fighters were killed and six others injured as a result of the ISIS attack on eastern Syria, according to a monitoring group.
The militants attacked military vehicles, checkpoints belonging to the regime and local militias in their former defense stronghold in Raqqa, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
ISIS is then said to have managed to control these positions for several hours, reported The National News on August 8.
Since being knocked out of its last stronghold in Bagouz in March 2019, the power of ISIS has greatly diminished. However, this terror group still maintains its presence in most rural areas in Iraq and Syria, where its remains launched attacks on security forces and civilians.
ISIS has also carried out suicide bombings in major cities, including one attack on Baghdad that killed 35 people in 2021.
His leader, Abu Hussein Al Husseini Al Qurashi, was killed in clashes with extremist group Hayat Tahrir Al Syam in Syria's Idlib Province, according to ISIS last week.
There was no immediate comment on Monday's attack on Syrian state media.
As many as 196 regime soldiers and allied militias have been killed by ISIS since the start of this year, in 105 attacks on the desert areas of Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, Homs, Aleppo, Suweida and Hama, according to SOHR estimates.
This figure includes 37 Iranian-backed militia members, who persistently supported President Bashar Al Assad during the civil war. Meanwhile, the number of civilians killed reached 157 people.

Meanwhile, international coalition forces are still in Syria to ensure ISIS is exhausted, in collaboration with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) led by Kurdish in the northeast. However, SDF forces are also often targeted by ISIS sleeping cells.
Separately, the United States has warned the terror group could return to Syria within a year or two if Washington withdraws.
