BMKG Asks Coastal Communities To Beware Of High Waves Of Up To Six Meters

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to coastal communities to be aware of the potential for high waves of up to six meters in several Indonesian waters on July 8-9.

"We ask people who live and work on the coast around areas where high waves are likely to occur to remain vigilant," said Head of the Center for Maritime Meteorology, BMKG, Eko Prasetyo in Jakarta, Saturday, July 8.

He said the wind pattern in northern Indonesia generally moves from the southeast-southwest with wind speeds ranging from 4-20 knots, while in southern Indonesia it generally moves from east-southeast at a speed of 8-25 knots.

"The highest wind speed was observed in the southern Sunda Strait, Banda Sea, Kep. Sermata-Kep. Tanimbar, and Arafuru Sea," he explained as quoted by ANTARA.

This condition, he continued, causes an increase in waves as high as 1.25-2.5 meters which is likely to occur in

The northern Malacca Strait, eastern waters of P. Simeulue, eastern waters of Mentawai Island, southern Lampung Bay, southern Sape Strait, Sumba Strait, P. Sawu waters, Kupang-P. Rote waters, Savu Sea, Ombai Strait, northern Natuna Sea, Natuna Sea, Bangka Belitung waters, Karimata Strait, east Lampung waters.

Then, the waters of Kep. Seribu, Java Sea, southern Kalimantan waters, Kangean Kep waters, Kotabaru waters, southern-medium Makassar Strait, Bali Sea-Laut Sumbawa, Selayar waters. Selayar, Flores Sea, Manui-Kendari waters, Maluku Sea, Seram Sea, southern Sorong waters, and Fakfak-Amapare waters.

Meanwhile, higher waves in the range of 2.5-4 meters are likely to occur in the waters north of Sabang, the western waters of Aceh to Kep. Mentawai, waters of Bengkulu, western Indian Ocean Aceh-Nias, southern waters of P. Bali to P. Sumba, the southern part of the Bali-Lombok Strait, the southern Indian Ocean south of NTT.

In addition, the southern waters of Kep. Banggai-Kep. Sula, the eastern waters of Baubau-Kep. Wakatobi, the southern waters of P. Buru-P. Seram, Banda Sea, the waters of Kep. Sermata-Kep. Tanimbar, the southern waters of Kep. Kai-Kep. Aru, and the Arafuru Sea.

Meanwhile, the wave height of 4-6 meters has the potential to occur in the western waters of P. Enggano, the western waters of Lampung, the western Indian Ocean Mentawai-Lampung, the western and southern Sunda Strait, the southern waters of P. Java, and the southern Indian Ocean Java-NTB.

"The potential for high waves in some areas could pose a risk to shipping safety," said Eko Prasetyo.
