JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will evacuate 538 Indonesian citizens (WNI) from Sudan as a result of the conflict in the country. Hundreds of Indonesian citizens will return to Indonesia via Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi revealed that at 01.00 am local time or 06.00 WIB, the Indonesian Embassy in Khartoum had succeeded in evacuating 538 Indonesian citizens to Port Sudan City.

"Alhamdulillah, at 01.00 am WS or 06.00 am WIB today, 538 Indonesian citizens have arrived safely in the city of Port Sudan consisting of 273 women, 240 men and 25 toddlers," he told the media, Monday 24 April.

He added that the evacuation, which was led directly by the Indonesian Ambassador to Khartoum, was carried out using 8 buses and 1 minibus belonging to the Indonesian Embassy and departed from Khartoum on Sunday, April 23 at 08.00 local time.

Most of the Indonesian citizens who were successfully evacuated were Indonesian students, Indonesian Migrant Workers, Indofood company employees and Indonesian Embassy staff and their families.

"Currently, the 538 Indonesian citizens are resting at a stopover in Port Sudan before leaving for Jeddah by sea," continued Retno.

After leaving for Jeddah, he continued, preparations for the return of Indonesian citizens to Indonesia will also continue.

He also asked all Indonesians who are still in Sudan to report themselves to the Indonesian Embassy in Khartoum so that they can be included in the second phase of evacuation.

"Therefore, respectfully request those who have not reported themselves immediately contact the Indonesian Embassy in Khartoum," said Retno.

He also explained that currently a small team for evacuation has also moved, both from Jakarta, led by the Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens and the assistance team from Riyadh and Jeddah.

"This morning, the evacuation team will also depart for Jeddah on an Indonesian Air Force aircraft consisting of the TNI Security Team; The health team from the TNI Health Center and personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," concluded Retno.
