AMBON - Ambon City is an example of implementing an elderly school in Maluku Province to support the formation of resilience and independence for the elderly in the family.

"The designation of an elderly school in Ambon will begin with a coordination meeting with the Maluku Provincial BKKBN, after an inventory of the elderly group in Ambon has been conducted," Head of the Ambon Population and Family Planning Service (PPKB) Office, Welly Patty said, as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, March 1.

She said the school for the elderly was one of the educational efforts for the elderly with the concept of informal education for the elderly.

This is in accordance with the mandate of RI Law Number 13 of 1998 concerning Elderly Welfare, whereby as a tribute and appreciation to the elderly, the right is given to improve social welfare, including education and training services.

The initial stage, said Welly, was that the cadres had collected data for the elderly in five sub-districts in Ambon City, where the elderly who would take part in the elderly school program was in the 60-74 year range.

In the data collection, she said, there are 400 elderly people in five sub-districts in Ambon City who will be prepared to learn about various things according to their age and interests that are useful for living in their old age.

"We will start with 10 schools first according to needs and follow the instructions of the Maluku Provincial BKKBN," she said.

One of the lessons in the school for the elderly is the role of the elderly, especially the elderly who are still potential in the family and society.

Welly hopes that the school for the elderly can reach all the elderly throughout Ambon City, so that later the elderly in five sub-districts in Ambon can be educated equally.

"It's not an easy job, but I'm sure if we all join hands and support each other nothing is impossible," she said.
