Alert Status, Mount Anak Krakatau Erupts Several Times

JAKARTA - Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, Lampung Province, has erupted several times since last night according to information released by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).

The Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, South Lampung, Andi Suardi, when contacted from Krui said that an eruption was still occurring on Monday, January 23 morning.

PVMBG noted that the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau occurred on Monday at 00.41 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) and 04.42 a.m. WIB, but the eruption ashes were not observed.

The next eruption occurred at 06.07 a.m. WIB with an eruption column height of about 300 meters above the peak or 457 meters above sea level (masl).

The eruption recorded by the seismograph had a maximum amplitude of 50 mm and a duration of 80 seconds, causing a column of thick gray ash to the east.

At 07.01 WIB, Mount Anak Krakatau erupted again with an eruption column height of about 300 meters above the peak or 457 meters above sea level and a column of thick gray ash heading east. The eruption was recorded by a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 50 mm and a duration of 27.5 seconds.

Anak Krakatau erupted again at 07.59 a.m. WIB, with an eruption column height of about 500 meters above the peak or approximately 657 meters above sea level and a column of thick gray to dark ash heading southeast. The eruption recorded by the seismograph has a maximum amplitude of 60 mm and a duration of 143 seconds.

The next eruption occurred at 08.08 WIB with an eruption column height of about 300 meters above the peak or approximately 457 meters above sea level and thick gray to black ash columns heading southeast. The eruption was recorded by a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 53 mm and a duration of 121 seconds.

Mount Anak Krakatau at 09.28 WIB experienced another eruption with an eruption column height of about 300 meters above the peak or approximately 457 meters above sea level and a column of thick gray ash heading southeast. The eruption was recorded by a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 53 mm and a duration of 38 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public, visitors, tourists and climbers not to approach Mount Anak Krakatau or carry out activities within a five-kilometer radius of the volcano's active crater, whose status is Alert (Level III).
