Activity Of Indo-Australian Plate Caused M 6,2 Earthquake On Aceh Singkil

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate resulted in an earthquake in the South Coast region of Singkil City, Aceh with a magnitude of 6.2.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 1.98 degrees North Latitude, 97.90 degrees East Longitude or precisely located in the sea at a distance of 41 km southeast of Singkil City, Aceh at a depth of 54 km.

"Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a type of shallow earthquake due to the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian plate which dived under the Eurasian plate," he said as reported by ANTARA, Monday, January 16.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that earthquakes have an oblique thrust mechanism.

"Until 06.00 WIB, the BMKG monitoring results had not shown any aftershock activity," he said.

The earthquake at 05.30 WIB had an impact and was felt in the Aceh Singkil and Gunung Sitoli areas with an intensity scale of IV MMI (if it was felt by many people in the house).

The earthquake was also felt in the Subulussalam area, South Aceh with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI (if it was felt by many people in the house), and the Padang Sidempuan area with an intensity scale of II-III MMI (the vibration was felt by several people, objects hanging light swaying).

"The modeling results show that this earthquake has no potential for a tsunami," he said.

BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth cannot be accounted for.

In addition, he continued, people are also advised to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged by the earthquake.
