JAKARTA - US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi called her visit to Taiwan as a commitment to democracy, despite repeated strong warnings and protests from China.

Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan late Tuesday on a trip she said demonstrated America's unwavering commitment to the Chinese-claimed island.

Meanwhile, China condemned the visit of the highest-level US official in 25 years as a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

"Our visit reaffirms that America supports Taiwan: a strong and dynamic democracy and our important partner in the Indo-Pacific," Pelosi wrote on Twitter.

"By traveling to Taiwan, we honor our commitment to democracy: reaffirming that the freedoms of Taiwan — and all democracies — must be respected."

Earlier, in an article published in The Washington Post, Pelosi called on the US authorities to remember their pledge to support Taiwan's defense

The Taiwan Relations Act sets out America's commitment to a democratic Taiwan, providing a framework for economic and diplomatic relations that will quickly develop into a major partnership, TASS reported.

The law fosters deep friendships rooted in shared interests and values: self-respect. determination and self-government, democracy and freedom, human dignity and human rights.” However, the US does not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

"It makes a solemn vow by the United States to support Taiwan's defense," to consider any attempt to determine Taiwan's future in a way other than peaceful. A threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific region and a serious concern to the United States," she said.

"Today, America must remember that oath. We must stand beside Taiwan, which is an island of resilience," she stressed.

Pelosi's article was posted on the newspaper's website minutes after her arrival at Taipei airport in Taiwan.

Beijing has repeatedly warned the US side that such a move will not go unpunished and that tough action will be taken, referring to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

Chinese warplanes buzzed across the line dividing the Taiwan Strait before her arrival. China's military has been on high alert and will launch a "targeted military operation" in response to Pelosi's visit, the defense ministry said.

China's military announced joint air and sea drills near Taiwan on Tuesday evening and tested launches of conventional missiles in the sea east of Taiwan, with China's state news agency Xinhua describing the drills as direct fire.

Separately, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby said President Joe Biden's administration did not want tensions over US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan to turn into conflict with China.

In a press briefing to reporters, Kirby noted that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has the right to visit Taiwan on Tuesday.

He also stressed that the trip was not a violation of China's sovereignty or America's longstanding "one-China" policy.

"What we don't want to see is this spiral into any kind of crisis or conflict," Kirby told reporters at a briefing Tuesday.

"There is no reason to increase this," he added.
