JAKARTA - The parliament has accepted the resignation of Gotabaya Rajapaksa from the President of Sri Lanka. Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation letter was sent from his place of escape, Singapore.

Quoted from CNA, Friday, July 15, the speaker of the crisis-hit country's parliament announced the acceptance.

Parliament is due to reconvene on Saturday and the speaker said he hopes to complete the process of electing a new president within seven days.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa has now entered Sri Lankan history. He was Sri Lanka's first head of state to step down since adopting the executive presidency in 1978.

He emailed his resignation from Singapore after flying there from the Maldives. Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled after demonstrators stormed his palace at the weekend.

"Gotabaya has legally resigned" from Thursday, speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana told reporters.

"I have accepted my resignation".

Under Sri Lanka's constitution, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe - whose departure is also demanded by protesters - will automatically become acting president until parliament can elect an MP to replace Rajapaksa for the remainder of his term.
