BANDUNG - A total of 1,276 cattle of various types were exposed to foot and mouth disease (FMD) according to data from the Bandung Regency Agriculture Service (Distan) as of Thursday, June 2.

Head of the Bandung Regency Distantial Office, Tisna Umaran, said that the spread of FMD is now relatively fast when one area has livestock infected with FMD.

"This is what we are worried about and wary of because of the rapid rate of spread," said Tisna in Bandung, West Java, Thursday.

He noted that 1,276 livestock infected with FMD consisted of 1,050 dairy cows, 212 beef cattle, 11 sheep, and three buffaloes.

According to him, a number of areas that have spread of FMD on livestock include the Cikancung, Pacet, Kertasari Pangalengan, Ciwidey, Pasir Jambu, Cilengkrang, Cileunyi, and Margaasih areas.

If there is an area or farm that has animals infected with FMD, according to him, animal breeders within a radius of 10 kilometers from that area must be on alert.

Now, he said, thousands of animals infected with FMD have been isolated to avoid contact with other animals. According to him, the isolation is done by preparing a special cage.

"So that the feeding can be more intensive, there are some ingredients that use honey, coconut water, use eggs," he explained.
