JAKARTA - The Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorology Station, Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reports that sea waves as high as 4 meters are still likely to hit a number of water points in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province.

"Sea waves with a height of 2.5-4 meters still have the opportunity to hit several water points in NTT, so fishermen and ship operators need to be wary of," said Head of the Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station Syaeful Hadi as quoted by Antara, Thursday.

The BMKG previously reported that sea waves with a height of 2.5-4 meters have the opportunity to hit a number of water points in NTT during 24-26 May 2022.

The potential for high waves, he said, is also likely to occur over the next three days (May 26-28), namely in the western part of the Sumba Strait, the Sawu Sea.

In addition, also in the Indian Ocean south of Sumba-Sabu, the waters south of Kupang-Rote and the Indian Ocean south of Kupang-Rote.

He said the potential for high waves needs to be watched out for because it poses a high risk to ferries, including fishing boats and barges.

Fishermen and ship operators need to pay close attention to the threat of high waves in the sea to prepare for a safe and smooth voyage.

Furthermore, Syaeful explained that while the synoptic conditions showed that the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia was dominantly moving from east to south with speeds ranging from 5-20 knots.

Meanwhile, in the southern part of Indonesia, the dominant movement is from Southeast to Southwest at a speed of 5-25 knots.

The highest wind speeds were observed in the northern waters of Sabang, the central and eastern Java Seas, the western waters of Lampung to the south of Banten, the eastern Makassar Strait, the Banda Sea, and the Arafuru Sea.

BMKG appealed to fishermen and ship operators in NTT to keep abreast of weather developments from the BMKG as a reference for shipping safety, said Syaeful Hadi.
