The Hamas Group Appreciates The Resolution Of The UN General Assembly Regarding Support For UNRWA

JAKARTA - The Palestinian militant group Hamas, appreciates its resolution on support for the United Nations Aid and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) adopted by the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Hamas said in a statement that the Zionist crime continues its policies and actions that exacerbate humanitarian disasters and intentional hunger against more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to IRNA from Egyptian media December 13.

The Zionist regime blocks the delivery of humanitarian aid to helpless civilians, deliberately targeting UN employees and humanitarian organizations, with the number martyred among UNRWA personnel reaching 203 people, Hamas said.

The statement added that the international community and the United Nations are expected to take steps to stop the ongoing attacks by the Zionist regime against humanitarian organizations, implementing the latest UNGA resolution.

As previously reported, UNGA in a follow-up session of the 10th special emergency session on Wednesday successfully agreed with the majority of the two resolutions, namely support for UNRWA and pressure for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The first resolution address the draft law approved by the Israeli Parliament Knesset on October 28 which prohibits UNRWA from operating in occupied Israeli and Palestinian territories, including Gaza and the West Bank.

As many as 159 countries support this resolution, 11 countries abstain and 9 countries oppose. Among the opposing countries are the United States, Israel and Paraguay, quoted from UN News.

Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, appreciated the adoption, hoping the ceasefire would begin soon.

"What we need is a ceasefire and UNRWA to carry out the humanitarian aid our people need in Gaza, including northern Gaza," he said.

Meanwhile, Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations opposed the resolution, with Israel over the past few years having informed the UN about UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, regarding actions involving agency employees.

"UNRWA has been infiltrated by Hamas, but the Assembly appreciates the activity and wants to demand a ceasefire and ignore the hostages," the Israeli Ambassador said.

"The future of Gaza must be without UNRWA," he stressed.

Israel is known to say UNRWA staff participated in the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 on Israel, which sparked the war in Gaza. Belangan, the United Nations said nine UNRWA staff may have been involved and have been fired.
