PLN Inaugurates 21 Green Hydrogen Generators
PT PLN (Persero) inaugurated the operation of 21 Green Hydrogen Plants (Green Hydrogen Plant) owned by PLN.
This inauguration was marked by valve playback (valve) and the signing of plates on green hydrogen cylinders by the Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (Dirjen EBTKE) Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi and PT PLN (Persero) President Director Darmawan Prasojo.
"Last month, on October 9, 2023, PLN inaugurated the first Green Hydrogen Plant in Muara Karang, sourced from 4 units of roof PLTS of 413 kWp, and Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) 2,077 MWh/year. And today, almost a month has passed PT PLN (Persero) re-initiating the Green Hydrogen Plant at 21 PLTU/PLTGU locations," said Yudo in his remarks, Monday, November 20.
Yudo explained that all the hydrogen produced comes from the development of EBT, namely Solar Power Plants (PLTS) with a total capacity of 4,644 kWp or equivalent to 6,780 MWh/year, and also implements RECs of 9,535 MWh/year.
"What an extraordinary achievement. Hopefully this can accelerate the realization of the hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia," continued Yudo.
Yudo explained that currently the government has compiled a National Hydrogen Strategy document.
This document will soon be launched to the public and can be used as a reference, strategy, direction, and purpose for hydrogen development in Indonesia.
"We are also preparing the Roadmap Hydrogen and National Amonia documents, where this document contains the action plan, as well as the hydrogen development target in Indonesia until 2060. The efforts that have been made by PLN are in accordance with our hydrogen strategy, especially in efforts to decarbonize and develop the hydrogen ecosystem in Indonesia," Yudo explained.
President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo added, the inauguration of the launching of 21 Hydrogen Plant is a continuation of the inauguration of the previous hydrogen plant at PLTGU Muara Karang with a larger capacity.
"Last month we only had 1 unit, now we have 21 units. In the past, the production capacity was only 51 tons/year, now it is 199 tons per year. In the past, green hydrogen production excesses could only be 140 fuel cell electric cars, now we are able to supply 424 cars and if in the past we only reduced 1,900 tons of emissions, now we are able to reduce 3,720 tons of CO2 emissions per year," explained Darmawan.

Darmawan said, the inauguration of 21 green hydrogen plants was the beginning of PLN's efforts to provide a clean source and build a much larger, stronger, more solid ecosystem.
"Today, we are launching 21 green hydrogen plants. But behind that, we are building a very capable PLN team capacity. PLN has thousands of PLN assets throughout Indonesia. In the future, we will prepare as locations for green hydrogen plant facilities so that it is not only 199 tons/year production, not only driving 424 fuel cells, not only reducing 3,700 tons of emissions per year. But much bigger," he concluded.
