Reaching 300 Cases, Animal Husbandry Service Says FMD Is Increasing In Ponorogo
PONOROGO - An outbreak of FMD or foot and mouth disease that infects cattle in Ponorogo Regency, East Java is showing an increasing trend, from previously reported under 100 cases now it has penetrated to 300 head of cattle.
"Yes, the most cases currently detected are in Sawoo District with 104 cases. The increase in cases is suspected to be due to vaccination of livestock so far not optimal," said the Head of the Livestock Service Office, Food Security and Fisheries of Ponorogo Regency, Masun in Ponorogo, Antara, Sunday, 19 February.
He continued, currently there are eight cows that have died due to FMD.
"The most rejection of the FMD vaccine is in Sawoo, Siman, and Bungkal. If Pudak has 100 percent of their livestock vaccinated, that's why there's only one case and that's livestock from outside the city," he said.
According to Masun, there are two possibilities why FMD cases in Ponorogo have risen again.
First, because the breeders are bringing in animals from outside the area, which can be seen from the cows that don't have ear tags or ear tags, which means they haven't received the vaccine.
"So each cow has an ear tag or identification tag on the ear where it says whether it has been vaccinated or not, from there we can see," said Masun
While the second, namely cows that really come from Ponorogo but have not received the vaccine. including those found in many cases in the Districts of Sawoo, Siman, and Bungkal.
To minimize transmission, continued Masun, so far his party has sprayed disinfectants at the animal market twice.
"We will continue to carry out biosecurity, spraying disinfectants before and after the market opens," he said.
