The 2024 Olympics In France, Russia Is Not Of Course Participated
PARIS - France, as the host of the 2024 Summer Olympics, cannot decide on the participation of Russian athletes in the event, French Foreign Ministry Spokesman Anne-Claire Legendre said Saturday.
"We are the hosts of the upcoming Olympics, but this status does not allow us to decide (regarding the participation of Russian athletes)," Anne said as quoted by ANTARA, Sunday, February 5.
Legendre said that this decision should have been made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which could now be known or at least know about the discussions taking place at the IOC.
"We will see what decisions will be taken," he added.
On February 2, a number of sports ministers from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland called on the IOC and international sports federations to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in the Olympics in Paris in 2024.
At the end of February, the IOC recommended that international federations prohibit Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international matches over developments in Ukraine.
On January 25, the IOC issued another recommendation suggesting that athletes who did not support military operations be able to participate in the international event as neutral representatives.
Russian Olympic Committee President Stanislav Pozdnyakov said the IOC did not ask Russian athletes to condemn the military operation.
