Sorry Chelsea, Sporting Director Salzburg Turned Down The Offer
JAKARTA - Red Bull Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund has spoken about Chelsea's interest in him. He confirmed the news was true.
However, Freund said, had refused Chelsea to stay at RB Salzburg.
Freund felt proud to be in talks with the management of the Blues. However, he insists, it is impossible to leave Salzburg.
"Yes, it is true that Chelsea wanted me and we have had talks. When a club of that size asks, it does not only respect me and the work of Salzburg," said Freund, as reported by The Sun.
"These are of course circumstances that require personal consideration. But I have come to the conclusion that I am in the best hands with Salzburg and that change is impossible for me."
Salzburg CEO Stephan Reiter also stated that Freund had informed him of talks with Chelsea. They eventually exchanged ideas privately and had conversations that led to a decision that was a relief for the club's fans.
"In fact, he will remain our sporting director," said Reiter.
This is a big blow for Chelsea. However, according to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Blues will continue to try to woo Freund before switching to other targets.
Chelsea's new owner, Todd Boehly is reportedly looking to have a sporting director before the January transfer window. Apart from Freund, there are several names on the list.
Paris Saint-Germain director Luis Campos is on the list. Chelsea are even willing to pay 135,000 pounds per week.
Former Liverpool transfer chief Michael Edwards is also on the Blues' radar.
