Deputy Chairperson Of MUI Anwar Abbas Remembers Buya Syafii As A Figure Not Thirsty For Wealth And Power

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Anwar Abbas recalled the former chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Buya Syafii Maarif as a national figure who was not hungry for wealth and power.

"Buya Syafii can be said to be a rare character because he is known as a character who is not thirsty for wealth and power. His life can be said to be fairly simple so that many people are surprised when they meet him," he said when contacted via text message, Friday, May 27 .

In addition, he also remembers Buya Syafii as a figure who never gives up and is principled with religious values that seem very thick in coloring his attitude and personality.

In this way, Buya Syafii will always tell the truth and straighten out what he thinks is wrong. "For him, what he thinks is right, he conveys it and if he sees something wrong, it will be criticized and rectified," he said.

Furthermore, he conveyed the most memorable experience when he met Buya Syafii, namely when the former general chairman of PP Muhammadiyah delivered a speech several years before reform in front of young Muhammadiyah cadres.

"Of the many that I admire in him, there are words that are very memorable to me which he conveyed several years before the reform at the PP Muhammadiyah Office, Jakarta, in front of young Muhammadiyah cadres," he said.

At that time, he continued, Buya Syafii reminded young Muhammadiyah cadres that Muhammadiyah was not only an Islamic movement, tajdid (renewal), and da'wah amar makruf nahi munkar (inviting to goodness and forbidding wrong things), but also as a knowledge movement.

"Therefore, because knowledge contains the truth, Muhammadiyah must strive to seek and explore the truth, then uphold and fight for it, and use that truth in carrying out personal or organizational activities and activities," he (Buya Syafii) said. he.

He also expressed his gratitude and at the same time prayed that all of Buya Syafii's sins would be forgiven and all his deeds of worship would be accepted by Allah swt.

"We as the generation behind it certainly don't forget to say thank you with a prayer that all of our sins are forgiven and all our deeds of worship are accepted by Allah swt.. Amen," he said.

Buya Syafii died on Friday at 10.15 WIB at the PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital, Sleman, DI Yogyakarta. According to the General Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, Haedar Nashir, Buya Syafii's body will be buried at the Muhammadiyah Cemetery in Donomulyo Hamlet, Kapanewon Nanggulan, Kulon Progo Regency, Friday afternoon, May 27.
