Switch Becomes Nintendo's Best Selling Console In 2021
JAKARTA - In its latest earnings report published today, the company confirmed that the Switch console had sold 103.54 million units as of December 31, 2021.
That's up more than 10 million since September, thanks to what it calls a good start by the OLED Switch, the device sold 10.67 million units in Q3 (October to December).
Of course, those sales far surpassed the 3.9 million PS5 units sold by Sony, bringing the Switch's total sales to 103.54 million since its launch in 2017, allowing it to also surpass the Wii U's lifetime sales of 101.63 million.
Overall, Nintendo sold 18.95 million Switch consoles during the first nine months of its 22nd fiscal year, which is down 21.4 percent when compared to the previous year.
After several reductions in recent months, the company said it expects to ship 23 million consoles before the end of March.
Here, Nintendo stated that the cause of the decline was due to a global shortage of semiconductors, as well as the previous year's Animal Crossing sales phenomenon.
However, it was noted that hardware sales for the quarter were still the best during the Switch generation, and rose to the second-highest level in the company's history.

The remastered Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl led Nintendo's game sales with a total of 13.97 million units over the past nine months. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 7.96 million units, Mario Party Superstars sold 5.43 million units, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons 4.99 million.
The Metroid Dread, introduced last year, has managed 2.74 million units since it went on sale. Nintendo also has a few new titles to count for next quarter, including Pokémon Legends Arceus arriving on January 28.
The title started well in the UK, surpassing Animal Crossing sales in its first week. Nintendo will also present Kirby and the Forgotten Land on March 25.
