JAKARTA – Founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos revealed that he would donate USD 1 billion (approximately IDR 14.2 trillion) in 2021. The donation is intended to support conservation efforts and is part of the Bezos Earth Fund commitment.

The donation is one part of a total of USD 10 billion (IDR 142 trillion) allocated to support scientists, activists, and organizations working to tackle climate change by 2030.

Later the allocation of funds will be used to support landscape restoration and transportation of the food system. One of the richest people on Earth said that nature is a life support system that is now becoming fragile.

"Nature is the source of our life support and it is fragile," Bezos said as quoted by CNBC International on Wednesday, September 22.

“I was reminded of this this July when I went into space with Blue Origin. I've heard that seeing Earth from space changes one's perspective on the world, but I figured for how much that would be true," Bezos added.

Grants from the Bezos Earth Fund are channeled to establish, expand, and manage protected and conservation areas. Much of the Bezos Earth Fund's focus is on the Congo Basin region of Central Africa, the tropical Andes as well as the tropical Pacific Ocean region. These sites are sources of biodiversity with abundant carbon stocks stored in the soil and oceans.

“Our natural condition is no better than 500 years ago, when we enjoyed pristine forests and clean rivers, from pre-industrial times. We can and must turn this around," Bezos said.

In July, Bezos officially resigned as CEO of Amazon. He handed over the throne to Andy Jassy. It is likely that Bezos will spend more time helping Earth problems through the Bezos Earth Fund and will also focus on managing his space rocket company, Blue Origin.
