Partnering With Telkomsat, BMKG Strengthens Satellite Communication Network

JAKARTA The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) met with Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) recently. During the meeting, the two discussed satellite services.

Satellite services are an important technology to strengthen operational communication networks according to the BMKG. This is because strong communication network infrastructure can help institutions in conducting observations, managing data, and others.

Therefore, BMKG collaborates with Telkomsat in strengthening its network. The head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, believes that efforts to strengthen satellite-based communication systems can help the country in dealing with various natural disaster risks.

The reliability of the communication network, especially satellite-based, is vital for the BMKG," said Dwikorita, quoted on Tuesday, May 20. "We hope this collaboration can strengthen our communication system to be more resilient and adaptive to the challenges ahead."

To date, BMKG has operated 9,816 units that include sensors and monitoring systems. All of these technologies are used to monitor weather, climate, air quality, and future natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

All of these tools are available in various cities, even throughout Indonesia, and work non-stop for 24 hours. All of these devices must be connected to the data center so that reliable communication networks are needed. Therefore, BMKG utilizes satellite technology.

Satellite services are more resilient in various conditions, both in disaster-prone areas and remote areas that are difficult to reach the network. The satellite will be used as the main network and as a backup system when conventional networks are experiencing disruption.

While utilizing satellite communication networks, BMKG can collect, process, and distribute data quickly and accurately to the public. In the future, BMKG wants to bring information faster with Telkomsat's support.
