JAKARTA - ChatGPT's growth continues to set new records. In March 2025, this OpenAI artificial intelligence application managed to become the world's most downloaded non-game app, according to a recent report from Appfigures. One of the main driving factors is the Studio Ghibli-style image generation feature that went viral.
Usually, the top positions of the most downloaded apps globally are always dominated by TikTok and Instagram, which alternate to rank one and two. But last month, ChatGPT managed to overtake both of them and claim the number one position.

ChatGPT: 46 million downloads
- 13 million from iOS
- 33 million from Android
Instagram: 46 million downloads
- 5 million from iOS
- 41 million from Android
TikTok: 45 million downloads
- 8 million from iOS
- 37 million from Android
The thin difference between the three makes ChatGPT's victory feel dramatic. But the ChatGPT power on Apple's App Store is the main determinant. Although most of the downloads came from Android, ChatGPT is in the number one position on the App Store, while TikTok is only in sixth place and Instagram isn't even in the top 10.
