JAKARTA - Qualcomm introduces the latest Snapdragon chip to improve performance and capabilities across top, mid-level, and entry-level devices.
These chips include Snapdragon 778G Plus 5G, 695 5G, 480 Plus 5G, and 680 4G. The four new chipsets equipped with 5G and 4G enable increased performance and capabilities to provide additional options for OEMs to meet consumer demands.
"Mid-range smartphones are expected to be the main driver for accelerating the use of 5G devices, especially in developing countries," said Deepu John, senior director, product management at Qualcomm Technologies Inc.
The most notable new chip is the Snapdragon 695, which replaces the Snapdragon 690 in Qualcomm's lineup. Unlike older models, the Snapdragon 695 will support both mmWave and sub-6GHz versions of 5G, which should help increase data rates, even on cheaper phones, which so far don't offer mmWave support.
There's also a sizeable performance boost. Qualcomm promises a 15 percent increase in CPU performance and up to 30 percent faster graphics rendering compared to the 690.
Another addition to the Snapdragon 680 chip, the new LTE-only SoC builds on the same and more modern 6nm process as the 695. Still, this upgrade isn't quite on par with the company's announced new 5G chip, but rather to help fill a gap in Qualcomm's chip lineup. for companies still looking for a dedicated 4G device. In this case, it can help cut costs in regions that don't yet have 5G deployments.
Then, there is the Snapdragon 778G Plus, the successor to the Snapdragon 778G with increased GPU and CPU performance from 2.4GHz to 2.5GHz, designed to provide a user-satisfying mobile game experience and artificial intelligence (AI) enhancements to provide a photo and video capture experience.

Meanwhile the company is also bringing Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G. This chip comes less than a year after the 480 appeared, and is already used in more than 85 devices. Building on this success, the Snapdragon 480 Plus will continue to drive 5G enhancements further, enabling users to access globally available 5G connectivity and enhancing performance to support productivity and entertainment experiences.
For the record, the four new chip platforms will be launched later in Q4 2021, with partners HMD, Honor, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. All of these vendors expressed interest in using at least some of those new Snapdragon chips.
